FRAUNHOFER-GESELLSCHAFT ZUR FOERDERUNG DER ANGEWANDTEN FORSCHUNG E.V.

The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft (research organization) is the leading organization for applied research in Europe. Fraunhofer maintains 66 research institutes. The Fraunhofer-Institute for Environmental, Safety, and Energy Technology UMSICHT develops applied and custom-made process engineering technologies. The customers are industrial enterprises, service companies and public authorities.

Fraunhofer will coordinate the project Sweedhart and will be responsible for the project management and dissemination and exploitation actions within the project. That includes the controlled communication and interactions between the project partners. On project level, Fraunhofer will be mainly responsible for the evaluation and final assessment of the different technological pillars for weed reduction and chaff treatment (WP 2, WP 3 and WP 5). Furthermore, Fraunhofer will bring in their great competence in the energetic utilization of biomass residues (WP 4). Required data and information are either generated by own experiments and studies, e.g. by building up a test rig for the hygienisation of material in WP 2, fuel characterization analysis and pelletizing experiments in WP 4, or desktop studies in WP 3. Otherwise, Fraunhofer will collect and compile data and information from the project partners, like information on weed distribution during harvest or technical boundaries for the implementation of technologies in harvesting machines. Fraunhofer will also prepare chaff-weed mixtures for later experiments in WP 1. Finally, Fraunhofer will work on the transferability study of the concepts to other crops by concluding available information of rapeseed and corn fractions and harvesting procedures as well as information obtained earlier in the project on the different pillars and specifically performed field tests.
